Iemanjá

Iemanjá

In front of the blue expanses and under the whisper of the waves that caress the coast, Iemanjá appears, the majestic queen of the seas and mother of all the Orixás in the rich Yoruba mythology. Her name resonates like the gentle song of the tides, indicating the presence of the goddess whose domain extends from the depths of the ocean to the serene shores. In the Yoruba language, she is revered as Iemanjá, personifying motherhood, fertility and protection.

Iemanjá, daughter of Olokun, is the queen of the seas, wrapped in blue cloaks and crowned with silver. Her story is intertwined with the creation and protection of all living beings. Legend has it that, with her silver fan, she calms storms and guides sailors safely through rough seas.

In Yoruba culture, Iemanjá is revered as the Orixá of motherhood, fertility and maritime protection. Her sacred day is Saturday, when the ocean waters reflect the moon's light in a special way. The predominant color is light blue, symbolizing the serenity of the seas and welcoming motherhood.

Religious syncretism often associates Iemanjá with the figure of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes or Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the Catholic tradition, showing the adaptation of Yoruba culture in new contexts.

Today, Iemanjá is invoked to seek protection, guidance and maternal blessings. Her cult is celebrated at seaside festivals, where offerings are thrown into the waters as a gesture of respect and gratitude. Iemanjá is the guardian of the family, inspiring bonds of love and protection that transcend the barriers of time and space.

May the serene light of Iemanjá illuminate our paths, bringing the peace of the seas and the loving motherhood that embraces us all. May her protective waters guide us safely through the seas of life, guiding us on the gentle currents of compassion and serenity.
